The deeply rooted Islamic creed + magnificent palaces and mosque costing billions of USD + traditional Borneo culture = one of the world’s most unique and interesting travel destinations. Sample incredible food, tour some of the gold domed mosques and take a tour down the river to experience a land unknown to many foreigners.
It’s a shame that such an exceptional area has to be so damn expensive! Furthermore, it’s tough getting to and, oh yeah, did I mention alcohol is illegal? It’s also a little disturbing seeing the opulence of the Royal Family on one hand and poverty of the average local on the other. Despite this wealth gap, the citizens love the Sultan dearly and he remains extremely popular in the oil rich Kingdom. One day in Bandar Seri Begawan is more than enough time to see everything twice, so pop in for the night and leave before having to beg the Sultan to bail you out of debt.
