Irkutsk (pop. 500,000) is located in the middle of Siberia on the banks of the infamous Lake Baikal. Irkutsk is a traditional Siberian town that still uses the old Soviet styled street cars for public transportation. The skyline is also lined with old cathedral’s, most notably the Epiphany Cathedral built in the 18th century.

XTS Rating: 6.5

Irkutsk is great for anyone interested in Siberia. And let’s face it, who isn’t fascinated with Siberia? It’s a mixture of Tsarist Russia, the USSR and local indigenous culture. It’s a great place to reside while exploring Lake Baikal (the world’s oldest and deepest lake) and the native ethnic groups that have lived off it for centuries. Irkutsk also lies along the Trans-Siberian Express, making easily accessible. It’s also the best place to transfer onto the Trans-Mongolian Express if you’re heading south into the Orient.
