Saint Petersburg (pop. 4.5 million) is formerly known as Petrograd and Leningrad and serves as Russia’s most important cultural hub. The city and former capital of the country is considered to be the most Westernized city of the Federation due to European styled architectural landmarks like Saint Isaac’s Cathedral, Peter and Paul Fortress, Palace Square, Alexander Column, Petergof, Nevsky Prospekt and the Winter Palace.

XTS Rating: 7- Saint Petersburg is not only beautiful, it’s filled to the brim of the shot glass with history, culture, art and history. The people are open minded and kinder when compared to the city’s rival- Moscow. There’s hundreds of places to go and see and also a fantastic starting point to cross into Scandinavia or board the Trans-Siberian Express.

However, Saint Petersburg is still part of new Russia’s 21st century natural resource boom, meaning it’s a bit on the expensive side. It’s also a bit touristy, especially during the warmer summer months.
