Moscow

Moscow (pop. 10 million) is Russia’s capital, largest city and financial center. It’s located in the western (European) part of the country and lies on the banks of the River Moskva. The city is defined by many internationally recognized monuments like Red Square, Spasskaya Clocktower, St. Basil’s Cathedral, Cathedral of Christ the Savior, Ostankino Tower, various communist memorabilia and Moscow International Business Center.

XTS Rating: 5- Moscow is a nice place to visit, but you don’t want to live there. The winters are long, dark and cold. Muscovites are notoriously snobbish to other Russians and unfriendly to foreigners. The food is bland and getting a visa is as tough as convincing Putin to give up his rule. Not to mention, it’s also one of the most expensive cities in the world!

However, it’s packed with history, has a unique culture and the local population devours enough vodka to sink Peter the Great’s navy. Furthermore, Moscow might be the best place to enter/leave the country, so you might as well stick around a few days if you’re in the neighborhood. It’s also a great place to embark on the Trans-Siberia Railroad, an unforgettable experience through the heart of the former USSR.
