The owners and several top ranked officials of three major online poker sites (Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker and Poker Stars) were charged Friday by federal prosecutors for breaking the US Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006. The bank accounts, payment processors and domain names of these online poker sites have been seized by the FBI and, as of now, are no longer available for public use. Representatives of Full Tilt Poker, Absolute Poker and Poker Stars have reframed from commenting on the current situation.

Online poker has boomed during the past several years due to the growing international popularity of Texas Hold’em and series of amateurs winning the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event competition. Poker websites have further assisted the sharp rise in fame while simultaneously generating billions of dollars in profit.

The recent siege is the United States’ most aggressive attack on online gambling ever and serves to set an example for other operating online poker/gambling websites.

Poker enthusiasts across the globe are indeed “on tilt” (a term in the poker which means losing your composure and ability to make rational decisions after a bad beat). Nonetheless, not all hope is lost. Gambling meccas such as Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Monaco and Macau will not be affected by the closing of online gambling websites.

Instead, the world’s “all in” hotspots will likely see a boom in the tourism industry from the FBI siege and slow but steady world economic recovery. A summer vacation to one of these destinations might prove a winner since the increase of poker addicts will produce hot tables (poker and other games alike), a more energetic nightlife and good deals/discounts by major hotel and casino chains.
