Osama bin Laden, founder of the Al-Qaeda terrorist organization responsible for the September 11th attacks in Washington and New York, was killed last weekend by a group of US Navy Seals. The covert operation took place at Osama’s mansion in Abbottabad, Pakistan. The compound is 50 km north of the country’s capital Islamabad and only 100 yards from a Pakistani military base. According to White House press officials, Seal Team Six stormed the compound and engaged in a 40 minute gun fight with Osama loyalist.  The covert-op force encountered bin Laden and offered him a chance to surrender; an ultimatum he refused. A member of the squad shot the FBI’s most wanted terrorist once in the chest and once in the head, killing him instantly.

Facial mapping and DNA analysis confirmed that there is a 99.9% chance that the man killed is Osama bin Laden. After analysis, the body of the world’s most recognized terrorist was transferred to the US aircraft carrier Carl Vinson in the north Arabian Sea.

Following Islamic burial tradition, a Muslim should be wrapped in a clean white cloth known as a kafan and buried underground as soon as possible with his or her head facing toward Mecca- the holiest city of the Islamic faith. While the US government did wrap Osama’s body in the kafan, they failed to adhere to the rest of Islamic burial practices. Instead, US officials opted to submerge him underwater off the coast of Pakistan to prevent any devoted followers from creating a shrine at his final resting place.

Some members of the Islamic community view the untraditional burying of any Muslim, no matter how good or evil they may have been perceived, as immoral and disgracing to their faith.

XTS Travel Alert: Travelers around the globe should be aware that retaliatory attacks by Al-Qaeda are expected. While international airports, train stations and embassies are on heightened alert, it’s wise for any traveler to take extra precaution and be aware of their surroundings at all time.
