While some places like Detroit, Memphis, St. Louis and Baltimore are commonly found on the US’s most dangerous city list, others might come be surprise; especially ones like New Haven (home to Yale University- one of the world’s most prestigious institutes for higher education) and Little Rock (a smaller city located in the predominately rural state of Arkansas). Data based off the FBI’s statistics reveals that there are several new comers to the list due to a raising number in unemployment.
It also might be shocking not to see municipalities like New Orleans, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Buffalo, Cleveland and Harford mentioned since they have historically occupied slots the US’ most dangerous city list. These cities failed to make the top 10 list this year not necessarily because they’re getting safer (quite the opposite, these urban centers also have a rising crime rate) but because other places (in particularly those experiencing economic woes and soaring unemployment) are becoming worst.
In conclusion, America’s suburbs and rural areas are becoming safer, the main factor causing the 5.5% decrease in violent crimes. But urban metropolises from coast to coast are becoming more dangerous, violent and impoverished as the years progress. As long as unemployment lingers in America’s cities, gangs, prostitution and illegal narcotics consumption will continue to rise and threaten society’s well being.
The United States is a first world developed nation but has the crime problem of a third world developing one. America’s urban centers are overran by brutal street gangs, her laws make it easy for anyone to purchase a gun legally and it’s the world’s largest consumer of illegal narcotics by far. Crime in US cities is only getting worse and ever so anarchic. Before the US can champion itself as “the best country on the planet” and serve as an example to hundreds of countries and territories across the globe, it must at the absolute least lower its dangerous crime index to those of other wealthy developed nations.
