Rio de Janeiro

Rio (pop. 14.3 million) is Brazil’s second largest city and cultural center. The former capital of the country is now considered an international celebration zone due to its gorgeous beaches, laid back attitude and, most notably, Carnaval. Rio’s topography is dotted with infamous monuments such as Christ the Redeemer, Maracana Stadium, Copacabana and Ipanema Beach and Sugarloaf Mountain.

XTS Rating 9.5- Rio is without question one of the coolest cities on the planet. While Carnaval is indeed one of the biggest celebrations in the world, it doesn’t matter since there’s a party literally every night of the week. During the day, it appears the Carioca (native citizen of Rio) doesn’t work. Instead, they’re seen playing volleyball and football on the beach, re-bronzing their tan skin in a skimpy bikini (aka “dental floss” in Portuguese) and/or enjoying a caipirinha at one of the city’s outdoor cafes. Even Jesus raises the roof in city of Samba!

The only thing keeping Rio from a perfect 10 is its rampant crime. While most murders only occur to those trafficking drugs in the favelas (Portuguese for shanty town), stray bullets striking innocent bystanders is not uncommon. Plus, the chances of getting robbed, likewise, are not unheard of.
