La Paz (pop. 900,000) is the de facto capital of Bolivia and the highest capital in the world at 3,660 meters (nearly 12,000 feet) above sea level. La Paz is located high up in the altiplano of the Andes Mountains and is home to many Aymara and Quechua Indigenous peoples.

XTS Rating: 8- This rating may surprise you since not many people make it to La Paz or Bolivia in general. The majority of travelers here are backpackers escaping the tourist traps of Machu Pichu, hippies that experimented with indigenous hallucinogens who never returned home from their “trip”, and/or prisoners caught in the cocaine trade. The city is also incredibly cheap and an awesome place to experience pre-European South American culture and chew on coca leaves since they’re legal in the Andean nation.

On the down side, altitude sickness is a serious problem and can really leave you bed ridden for a few days. La Paz can also be a bit dangerous if not cautious and abject poverty turns the streets into public restrooms.
