Lima

Lima (pop. 8.5 million) is Peru’s primer urban center in terms of politics, economics and culture. The City of Kings is full of indigenous and European history/architecture since it was once the Spanish Empire’s most important New World posts. The city is home to the Historic City Center and numerous museums and galleries of the regions rich past.

XTS Rating: 3- Lima is just your average, over-crowded, polluted, run down city.  There’s not much to see or do and it’s impossible to get anywhere. It’s quite safe in the neighborhoods of Miraflores, San Isidro and San Borja, but also expensive and pretentious. Exploring the streets of any city is an adventure (Lima no exception because you might witness a cock fight or two); but just make sure not to bring a lot of cash or valuables because you won’t be coming home with them.

Nonetheless, you’ll most likely have to pass through Lima to get to Peru’s treasures like Machu Pichu, the Amazon Rainforest Basin, Lake Titicaca and other off the beaten track indigenous villages. If you’re stranded for a night in Peru’s capital, find a good ceviche joint and drink some Inca Cola to pass the time.
