XTS Rating: 5- Yea, Machu Pichu is cool and all, but there’s enough tourists to make Pizarro get back on the boat and return to Spain. Cuzco is overrun with boutiques selling traditional “made in China” Inca memorabilia and overweight westerners taking pictures of their gourmet pizza. Unfortunately, the city has lost a lot of its charm.
Not all hope is lost. There’s hundreds of ancient sacrificial sights, tombs and temples around Cuzco that vacationers don’t waste their time with. The Inca Trail, a several day hike up to Machu Pichu, is also an adventure and challenging enough to keep the majority of sightseers away. There’s also a surprising amount of bars and discos with cheap drink deals.
