Ciudad del Este (pop. 320,000) is Paraguay’s second largest city located on the Triple Frontera (the point on the Parana River where Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina share a common border).  The city is popular for an extensive market selling bootleg and legitimate cheap electronics and other goods.

XTS Rating: 8- There is no travel guide out there recommending a visit to Ciudad del Este… except this one. There’s literally no place in the world like it. Apart from native Paraguayans, there’s a sizeable foreign born Taiwanese, Chinese, Korean, Arab and Persian population drawn to sell products in the city’s market. There’re mosques, temples, churches and various languages and foods from all over the world present in this small city in the interior of South America. It’s also incredibly cheap and you can buy just about anything there. Basically, it’s the kind of place an “Xtreme” traveler wants to check out for a few days and definitely not the place for your honeymoon…

You’re probably already suspicious of this place. Crime is not a major problem, but due to the anarchy, many extremist groups and organized crime syndicates have set up shop in Ciudad del Este to finance overseas transactions. Other than that and a little pollution and garbage in the streets, it’s not really that bad of a place.
