Bogota

Bogota (pop. 9.6 million) is the capital and largest city of the Republic of Colombia. The municipality is often referred to as the “Athens of South America” due to its high number of universities, libraries and educational institutions. Bogota’s topography is marked with Bolivar Square, towering sky scrapers, the Andes Mountains and a never ending maze of interweaving streets and alleys.

XTS Rating: 6.5- On one hand, Bogota’s an urban jungle with people racing to work in public buses blaring salsa. On the other, the universities give it a unique character with a bohemian feel. There’s many bars, plazas and other cool places to hang out at, but these areas might be hard to find unless you have a local friend to show you around.

Bogota is cursed with year round overcast skies and temperate weather. Though the city’s crime rate has improved since the 1990s (when it was considered one of the most dangerous cities in the world), one should still be very cautious of street crime.
