Cartagena (pop. 1.2 million) is Colombia’s 5th largest city. The township is located on the northern coast and therefore has more Caribbean influence that the rest of the country’s major cities. Cartagena is well known for being a party hot spot and its colonial center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

XTS Rating: 9.5- Everyone likes Cartagena. Colombians and backpackers from around the world come to hang out on the beach and party till sunrise. To cure your hangover, there’re few islands off the coast with outstanding beaches away from the craziness. Cartagena is also the best place to cross into North America. Captains in Cartagena harbor regularly sail backpackers to Panama via the San Blas Islands for a cheap price. The trip lasts several days and is an awesome way to experience sailing the Caribbean the non-touristy way.

The only bad thing about Cartagena is the summer heat. Even locals complain that it’s too hot to go outside sometimes. Also, you’ll be hassled to buy cocaine on every corner. If these two things don’t bother you, then you might as well make Cartagena a 10 in your own rating system.
