Panama City (pop. 1.3 million) is the isthmus nation’s capital, financial center and an international commerce hub linking the East, West, North and South. It is also ranked the most livable and most developed city of Central America. Panama City is lined with modern high rises, the Panama Canal, the Bridge of the Americas and tropical rainforest in the outskirts.

XTS Rating: 5- Panama City isn’t your typical Central American joint. It’s very developed, a little expensive, touristy and extremely Americanized. These factors can definitely be a turn off for the average backpacker.

On the contraire, tropical, Latino cities are always cool. There’s a little bit of local and indigenous culture still present, the Canal is pretty amazing and always worth checking out, and the metropolis is a great transit point to the San Blas islands off the country’s eastern coast. For the “Xtreme” traveler, Panama City might be the best place to begin your trek through the Darien Gap. If so, enjoy the fruits of Panama’s capital beforehand because the next years of your life might be spent as a hostage in a remote jungle prison.
