San Jose

San Jose (pop. 1.7 million) is the country’s political and economic center. The nation’s capital lies in its geographic center in the midst of one of the most ecologically diverse rainforest on the planet. San Jose is most noted for eco-tourism and a growing high-tech industry.

XTS Rating: 2- There’s not much to see or do in San Jose. It’s your typical Central American city with unnamed streets, chaotic driving and horrendous public transportation, but also atypical since it’s expensive, not too dangerous and fairly unpolluted.

Most visitors coming to San Jose are either passing through to get to the country’s spectacular rainforest or pristine beaches. There’s also a large contingent of middle aged men from the US who come for drinking, gambling and prostitution. If neither extremes fit your description of a good time, there’s really no reason to enter San Jose or Costa Rica in general.
