Leon (pop. 180,000) is Nicaragua’s second largest city located between Managua and the Honduran border. The city is renowned for its classic colonial architecture, old cathedrals and young population.

XTS Rating: 7- Leon is a great backpacker destination. You can really get a true taste of Nicaraguan life without Western culture clouting the mood. It’s also a safe, cheap and liberal city that’s accommodating to travelers passing through. It’s definitely worth checking out after spending a few days on the beach in San Juan del Sur.

Leon can get boring quick. You can see the entire city in one day. Afterwards, take a lead from current President/former Sandinista leader Daniel Ortega and leave quick with the intentions of returning in the future.
