Guatemala City

Guatemala City (pop. 3.7 million) is Guatemala’s capital and Central America’s largest city. Located in the Ermita Valley, the metropolis is surrounded by mountains, rainforest and an array of natural beauty. “Guate” is known for its active volcanoes and traditional colonial villages in the outskirts of town.

XTS Rating: 2.5- Guate is a crime ridden disarray plagued with corruption, pollution, gang activity and boredom. There’s not much to do around town and the nightlife is limited to drinking with other foreigners in the backpacker district. However, the people are pretty chill, laid-back and very welcoming.

The only thing keeping Guatemala City from a 1 are the active volcanoes and colonial cities surrounding the urban block. The most notable of these two is Picaya Volcano and the party town of Antigua. So it’s worth sticking around the capital for the day trips or, better yet, just stay in Antigua instead for a way more enjoyable experience.
