Cancun

Cancun (pop. 500,000) is located in the northern tip of the Yucutan Peninsula on the Caribbean coast. The Glistening City is an international tourist destination defined by world renowned beaches, large hotel chains and Mayan ruins close at hand.

XTS Rating: 4- To the naked eye, parts of Cancun resemble the United States. It’s plagued with fast food joints, T-shirt shops, massive discotheques and drunk American college students on Spring Break who imitate the caste of Jersey Shore. All culture is lost; leaving the only thing to do in Cancun is drink and swim in the ocean.

Nevertheless, the beaches (despite being overcrowded) are as gorgeous as they say. There’re also some unmapped traditional towns and Mayan ruins on the outskirts of the tourist mecca and Cancun might just be your best transit point to get there.
