Mombassa

Mombasa (pop. 900,000) was a major trading hub between India, Asia and eventually Europe for almost a thousand years. The architecture and culture is a blend of Indian, Arab, European and African styles, and it has a range of attractions ranging from Fort Jesus, built by the Portugese in the 16th century and Old Town.

XTS Rating: 8- Mombasa is far more relaxed than Nairobi (probably because of the sweltering heat). There are the same dangers of muggings and other violent crime, but if you don’t take risks, you’ll be fine. Also be aware that there is a far greater risk of malaria compared to Nairobi.

Mombassa is an amazing city. Stepping into it makes you feel like you’ve entered a time machine to the past. Aside from the amazing architecture and food, it’s also the connecting point to the spotless beaches in Lukoni to the south, the ruins of the Gede (a mysterious city-state hidden away in the woods) and Malindi in the north. It's unbelievably hot and it will slow you down, but it won't stop you from enjoying the markets, buildings, spicy food, the mix of cultures. Genuinely, for my money, this is one of the most exciting and intriguing cities in the world.
