Nairobi

Nairobi (estimated pop. 4 million) began as a small stop-over camp during the building of the Mombassa-Kampala railway line but has since grown into the administrative and political capital of the country. There’re numerous shopping centers, a bright night life and even an ice rink (one of a handful in all of Africa). It has a strong Western feel, but it’s also remarkably African in its pace of life (varying from frenetic to crazily laid back) , Safaris and loud markets.

XTS Rating: 6.5- Make no mistake, Nairobi is dangerous. Do not walk around the streets at night and make sure you use a trusted taxi driver (ask your host, hotel or hostel for theirs). You should also be aware that the rich and poor live alongside each other in very close proximity, a trait that creates a whole array of other problems.

That said, it is a quirky city with lots to do and every major African country is represented in both people and food. During the day, don’t be afraid to get from A to B on matatus (privately owned minibuses) and visit the markets at every opportunity. It’s also a phenomenal place to embark on a safari and experience the infamous Serengeti.
