5. Dark Greens
Your mother was apparently on to something when she forced you to sit at the table despite your utter refusal to eat your greens. Dark green vegetables such as kale, chard, collard greens, bok choy, broccoli, asparagus, green beans etc are packed with vitamins A and C, iron, calcium and phytonutrients. They are very filling, high in fiber and low in calories. The new diet recommendations made by the American Heart Association recommends eating at least 4 servings of vegetables a day from a variety sources.
4. Salmon
Since more and more people are moving away from red meat for various reasons (sorry not me!) salmon is a perfect alternative. It is a good source of protein and omega 3 fatty acids. With more than a decade of solid supporting evidence this is little disagreement that salmon is one of the healthiest foods on the planet. The American Heart Association recommends eating at least two servings of fish a week, particularly fatty fish such as salmon.
3. Pomegranate
Pomegranates have become uber trendy and quite controversial over the past couple of years- no small feat for a poor fruit originating from the Iranian plateau and Indian Himalayas! Seeing as people are making widely disputed claims about the potential benefits of pomegranates we’ll just stick to the facts. Pomegranates fruit contain polyphenols, tannins and anthocyanins, which are all beneficial antioxidants. In addition the juice contains very high levels of antioxidants- higher than most other fruit juices, red wine or tea! There have been many conflicting reports as to how super this super fruit is, but one thing's for sure- this is one healthy ass fruit!
2. FlaxSeed
Ok, so flaxseed isn't nearly as exciting as pomegranates, but they provide very important benefits. Derived from the plant source, flax seed offers a vegetarian alternative to provide omega 3 fatty acid. Flax seed has been shown in many studies to offer heart-healthy benefits. In addition, flaxseed also contain other beneficial ingredients such as fiber and lignan, a type of antioxidant phytoestrogen. Research revealed that lignan in flax seed shows promising results in fighting disease, particularly cancer.
And now for the highly anticipated, number one super food......
1. Walnuts
In addition to being one of the sexiest and most bad ass nuts around, walnuts are one of the best plant sources of protein. They are rich in fiber, B vitamins, magnesium and antioxidants such as Vitamin E. Nuts in general are also high in plant sterols and omega 3 fatty acids. Walnuts, in particular, have significantly higher amounts of omega 3 fatty acids as compared to other nuts. In closing, walnuts asked me to print their favorite joke:
“Q) What do you call nuts on a wall? A) Wallnuts. Q) What do you call nuts on a chest? A) Chestnuts. Q) What do call nuts on a chin? A) A blow..” Wait a second walnuts, thats not the kind of joke we expect out of our #1 Super Food! I told you they were bad ass.
