Pyongyang (pop. 3.2million) is the DPRK’s capital and most populated city. The Taedong River cuts through the city while centrally planned architecture covers the rest. Pyongyang is also coined “The City of Monuments” due to structures like the Juche Tower, Memorial Palace, Arch of Triumph, Arch of Reunification, Ryugyong Hotel and Mansudae Hill.

XTS Rating: 9- Bad news is you can’t enter the country without a tour group no matter what. These can be a bit pricy and there are certain rules, guidelines and regulations you must follow while visiting any place in the DPRK. Yes, you can shower and urinate in privacy, but when out in public your guides will make sure you’re not wondering off alone to spread counter-revolutionary propaganda.

Good news is it’s not as bad as it seems and a trip to North Korea is priceless since it’s is without a doubt one of the most unique countries around. Don’t worry about the guides either, they’re not the secret police. They won’t take you on a Kim Jung Il treasure train across the country, but they will have a few beers and soju with you at night and answer any questions you have regarding their country. You’ll see some fascinating sights and learn about a life you thought only existed in Orwell novels.
