XTS Rating: 6- There’s one main road (Peace Avenue) that cuts through the heart of town where you can find the bars, eateries, museums, galleries and music shows. It’s also fun to take a stroll along the road aroun Sukhbaatar Square and watch the locals gamble on intense board games. Furthermore, many residents of the city still live in portable Yurt tents and there’s a strong Buddhist influence; the place is jam-packed of ancient culture which always makes for an interesting experience.
Ulaanbaatar is straight-up hideous. It’s polluted, a bit dangerous, has Siberian mind numbing winters and Genghis Kahn vodka will give you a hangover as incapacitating as the 13th century conquest. On the other hand, the rest of the country is one of the most beautiful, spiritual and sparsely populated regions on the planet. More than likely you’ll have to pass through the capital to get into the interior, so try to enjoy it for what it’s worth
