Taipei (pop. 6.7 million) is the Republic of China’s capital and financial heart. The city located in the most northern section of the country and is a very modern/technologically advanced metropolis. Taipei’s atmosphere is defined by Taipei 101 (the world’s second largest building), Long Shan Temple and the Chiang Kai-shek and Sun Yat-sen Memorials.

XTS Rating: 9.5- Taipei at first may seem like your average industrialized, contemporary East Asian metropolis; and it is. But it’s not nearly as expensive as the rest of them. You can go, eat at one of the many night markets, party until the break of dawn and explore aboriginal Taiwanese and ancient Chinese cultural without blowing a hole in your wallet. It gets better- the residents are some of the friendliest on the planet, the beaches a stone’s throw away and the cuisine phenomenal.

Besides the occasional typhoon, earthquake and the possibility of China invading at any minute, there’s nothing to dislike about Taipei. In some areas, it’s a little too westernized, and there’s a large ex-pat community of businessmen, students and ESL teachers, but these places can be avoided if you’re looking for the more traditional side of things.
