Ulaanbaatar (pop. 1.2 million) is Mongolia’s capital and only major city. Ulaanbaatar (which means “Red Hero”) is located in the center of the nation in a region known as the steppe. The municipality is characterized by the Zaisan Memorial, Sukhbaatar Square, various museums dedicated to Genghis Kahn and the Mongol Empire, the Winter Palace and Gandan Monastery.
