One in Two Americans Impoverished

According to a recent government census, nearly 1 in 2 Americans have fallen below the poverty belt and/or are living off savings that place them in the "low income" bracket. The combination of a weak economy, high unemployment rate at just below 10% and stagnant wages with rising inflation have all contributed to the soaring level of poverty in the United States. The data also concludes that 1 in 5 children in the USA now live in poverty.

The numbers of the recent census are quite abysmal and much higher than expected. However, the ratio to rich and poor would be even higher if it weren't for a government subsidized saftey net system of foodstamps, tax credits, medical assistance packages, ect... Therefore, if the Congress goes along with further State cuts, we can expect the US poverty rate to climb even higher.

An evem more astonishing point is the wealth distribution amognst various races. The poverty rate in the Hispanic community reached 73%! African Americans, Asians and other non-whites topped off the list, respectively. So, now it is clear that American wealth is unfairly distributed amongst social classes and, perhaps even more disturbing, race.

It's funny being an American world traveler like myself because I always get the same question, "Is everyone rich in America?" They base their information off TV shows and Hollywood films, so of course they believe all live in mansions and drive fancy cars. However, now we see that they should actually reverse the question and say, "Is everyone in America poor?"

While not everyone in the US is impoverished (yet), it sure does seem that the number will be pushing up into the 75 percentile some time soon, especially if the economy, unemployment rate and wages remain lackluster and local governments decide to cut social spending. Unfortunately, it seems that the American dream is now becoming an American nightmare for the millions of immigrants who came to this land searching for opportunity.

In conclusion, the only good news I can really pick from this data is this- Next time someone asks me if all Americans are rich, I can easily respond, "Only in the movies."
