One in Two Americans Impoverished

Trey Archer Published in United States on Thursday, 15 December 2011 14:32

According to a recent government census, nearly 1 in 2 Americans have fallen below the poverty belt and/or are living off savings that place them in the "low income" bracket. The combination of a weak economy, high unemployment rate at just below 10% and stagnant wages with rising inflation have all contributed to the soaring level of poverty in the United States. The data also concludes that 1 in 5 children in the USA now live in poverty.

Occupy Wall Street- A Movement Worth Supporting

Trey Archer Published in United States on Wednesday, 12 October 2011 19:56

This is the United States of America- a land not used to mass protest (unlike France, Greece or Argentina). This is why when people first heard of the Occupy Wall Street rally, many thought it was just going to fizzle out and die. But guess what, it hasn’t and it’s only getting stronger.

Sunday marks the tenth anniversary of the deadliest single attack on US soil. As we all know on the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 terrorists from the Islamist militant group al-Qaeda hijacked four passenger jets. The hijackers intentionally crashed two planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City; both towers collapsed within two hours. Hijackers crashed a third plane into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. When passengers attempted to take control of the fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, it crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, preventing it from reaching its intended target in Washington, D.C.  In all 2,995 people perished as a result of the four coordinated suicide attacks.

America's Worst Housing Markets

Trey Archer Published in United States on Saturday, 06 August 2011 11:43

If you’ve been living in an abandoned house for the past several years and haven’t heard, America’s real-estate market is on the brink of foreclosure. Since the economic turn down of late 2008, high unemployment rate and fear by many expert economists of a double dip recession, hundreds of thousands of homes across the Unites States have been abandoned. So, what cities round out our top 10 in regards to making the outskirts of Chernobyl look like a thriving metropolis? Good thing you asked, because we’ve got the list right here for you:

With four days left before the United States hits its debt limit,  Republicans pressed ahead with a deficit plan that cannot pass Congress and President Barack Obama told lawmakers to stop wasting time and find a way "out of this mess."

Republicans in the House of Representatives said they expected to vote on Friday on a retooled deficit-reduction measure that would raise the debt ceiling.  The bill is opposed by Democrats and the White House, but Republicans insist it clear the House before they will start talks toward a compromise measure.

Heat Wave Scorches US

Trey Archer Published in United States on Friday, 22 July 2011 15:10

Record breaking temperatures scorched the mid-west and eastern parts of the US this Thursday creating one of the most intense heat waves in recent history. The heat wave has caused weather experts to place a “heat advisory warning” for nearly 150 million people (or roughly half the population of the entire United States). To make matters worse, just when everyone thought it couldn’t get any hotter, Friday and Saturday’s heat index is expected to raise the mercury by several degrees to surpass Thursday’s already unbearable conditions.

Three summer vacationers tragically fell to their death at Vernal Falls in Yosemite National Park. According to the associated press, one of the victims ignored signs not to enter the Merced River- the tributary that leads to the infamous waterfall. After the first victim was swept away by the vicious current, the second one entered and tried to save him. After the second was tackled by the strong waters, the third member of the party jumped in and tried to save the former two.

As of now, the bodies of the victims have not been found, but park authorities have presumed all three to be dead since surviving the massive fall at Yosemite Park’s Vernal Falls is near impossible.

As mentioned, Vernal Falls is very popular amongst tourists, meaning many witnessed the horrifying event. Adding to the terror, one eye witness stated, “I saw the man’s eyes as he went over the falls… It was devastating.”

We travel for pleasure, enlightenment and various other reasons. But sometimes the trips end in heartbreak and/or even death. Many question the “xtreme” traveler’s motives for wanting to explore so-called “dangerous” areas off the beaten track since they’re considered unsafe and hazardous. Nonetheless, as seen with the recent Yosemite National Park tragedy and other similar misfortunes at “non-xtreme” vacationer hot-spots, bad luck can strike anyone, anywhere at any time.

When it’s your time to go it’s your time to go and there’s nothing you can do about it. For this reason, there should be no reason not to explore faraway places because the chance of something bad happening from Yerevan to Yosemite (although both slim) is equal.
Whether a backpacker or tourist or vacationer, it’s always wise to dismiss hubris and obey warning signs because they (believe it or not) are there for a good reason…

Green Card Lottery Disapoints Thousands

chasmcarroll Published in United States on Saturday, 16 July 2011 08:03

The 22,316 people who believed they had won the US State Department's green card lottery – the global lottery that drew 19 million applicants seeking the right to immigrate to the US permanently – on Thursday lost an appeal to have the results of that lottery stand. On May 19, the State Department announced that a computer glitch had made the results from the lottery invalid, and that a second would need to be held. The results of that second lottery, the State Department says, were posted to the website Friday. For those who won the invalidated lottery, the news was devastating. Nearly 2 million applicants had already visited the results website by the time the error was discovered and the website taken down on May 5, and about one-fourth of the selected had learned of their selection.
Thirty-six individuals representing the “22,000 hopefuls” had filed a federal lawsuit urging the State Department to not void the lottery results. The plaintiffs in the lawsuit spoke of sharing the news with their children, quitting their jobs, selling land for money to immigrate, and marrying a loved one to make him or her eligible for immigration.

America's Fattest States

Trey Archer Published in United States on Sunday, 10 July 2011 15:01

The results of a recent study reveal the fattest American States. Mississippi, for the seventh year in the row, has proven once again to be the US’s most obese state. Rounding out the top 5 is Alabama, West Virginia, Tennessee and Louisiana, respectively.Twelve of the fifty US states have an obesity rate of over 30%, an astonishing number. What’s even more surprising is the fact that five years ago Mississippi was the only American state with an obesity rate of over 30%. The statistics also point to the fact that the majority of America’s most obese states lay in the South.
